Mapping your business with a clear and simple top-level value stream map can itself help staff, new and old, better understand the organization and make it work better. Add the next link, the process definitions, and you can galvanize ownership, empowerment, effectiveness and improvement.
To really drive improvement you need metrics that are relevant, and linked to both the top level business objectives and to the needs of the internal customer; get these right and you will always meet the needs of the external customer!
