The People:

Embodying a commitment to safety-first values
By prioritising and protecting the well-being of their people, Samsung delivered even more than anticipated thanks to their coordinated strategy.

Samsung SDI, which makes rechargeable batteries and energy storage systems, already placed a high priority on employee well-being. But they were determined to maintain high expectations by adopting the latest Occupational Health and Safety standard

The Challenge:

The next step on a best practice journey
With a plan to migrate from BS OHSAS 18001 to a new global standard, Samsung SDI wanted to cement its position as a safety-conscious employer while integrating its management systems effectively.

Samsung SDI has featured in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and strives to align with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), including provisions around the wellbeing of their people.

But with the introduction of a new global standard, ISO 45001, Samsung SDI recognized the need to adapt to new ways of working. The organization wanted to harmonize standards like Quality Management and Environmental Management into Samsung SDI's way of working more efficiently.

The solution:

Accelerating progress through health and safety
Successful certification for Occupational Health and Safety (ISO 45001) helped unlock a huge range of benefits for Samsung SDI beyond the enhanced wellbeing of employees.

Samsung SDI was the first in South Korea achieves Occupational Health and Safety certification. Alongside this, they embarked on a strategy to bring several other standards into a holistic, high-level structure that could streamline their operations.

The results brought Quality Management (ISO 9001), Energy Management (ISO 5001) and Environmental Management (ISO 14001) together, creates new efficiencies that helped the organization become more sustainable in areas such as water waste, biodiversity preservation and carbon emissions reduction.
