What Auditors Are Starting to Question

As ISO 14001 transitions toward its 2026 revision, auditors are moving beyond surface compliance and focusing on how effectively systems are applied in practice.
Across ISO 14001‑certified organizations, current audit discussions increasingly centre on:

  • How climate risks are identified, reviewed, and updated
  • Whether life‑cycle thinking genuinely influences procurement and supply‑chain decisions
  • How leadership is involved beyond approval and endorsement
  • How environmental risks from suppliers and contractors are controlled
  • Whether EMS risks are reviewed when the business, suppliers, or operations change

These areas do not always result in immediate non‑conformities. Instead, they often lead to extended discussions, follow‑up actions, and transition concerns.

Ask Yourself:

  • Are climate risks structured and current — or generic statements?
  • Can leadership roles and accountability be clearly explained?
  • Would supplier environmental performance withstand detailed audit questioning?
  • Are EMS risks reviewed when new suppliers, processes, or sites are introduced?

If answering these relies on long explanations, auditors will spot the gaps too.

ISO 14001:2026 Readiness is about evidence, not effort

Readiness comes from strengthening what already exists - sharpening how risks are identified and owned, addressing practical gaps in life‑cycle application, reinforcing supplier and contractor controls, and aligning leadership involvement with audit expectations.

When these elements are clear and connected, transition audits become structured discussions, not exercises in justification.
