For ease, this regulation is often referred to as Regulation 4 or Reg 4. It’s also often referred to as ‘WRAS approval’, which stems from a time when WRAS was the only formal approval available to demonstrate compliance with these UK regulations and byelaws.  Today, several approval processes exist, including the Regulation 4 Kitemark™ certification from BSI.

Any manufacturer, based anywhere in the world, supplying water fittings or plumbing products for use in a domestic or food production setting in the UK should seek certification to demonstrate that its products comply with Regulation 4.

Failure to do so could, in effect, exclude their products from the UK.

Regulation 4 Kitemark™

Certification to Regulation 4 Kitemark™ enables manufacturers – and distributors – to send a clear message to customers that a product is both safe and efficient to use, protecting public health and safeguarding water supplies.

Recognized as a symbol of outstanding quality, safety and trust for more than 120 years, the BSI Kitemark™ can help boost sales and grow market share.

Why choose Regulation 4 Kitemark™ certification from BSI?

  • Choose where you would like product testing to be carried out. We can conduct tests in our state-of-the-art laboratory or, if suitable facilities are available, we can perform ‘witness testing’ at your premises, or a combination of the two.
  • We offer a transparent route to compliance, using the most up to date specifications written by industry experts.
  • We’re a one-stop-shop for certification needs. Working with a single certification body means you can combine QMS assessments and test evidence, reducing costs.
  • Our team of specialist water fittings engineers and UK and global factory assessors have extensive experience in compliance and quality assurance and manufacturing.
  • Our UK-based certification managers are on hand to help solve compliance issues. They will also remind you when a product is due for re-testing, so you don’t need to worry about keeping track of deadlines.

The route to Kitemark certification

There are two key elements that must be achieved to be awarded Regulation 4 Kitemark certification:

  1.  ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management System (QMS), including the implementation of a framework to ensure ongoing compliance
  2. Product testing to demonstrate compliance with the requirements of Regulation 4

The route to gaining Kitemark certification consists of six stages

Once the Quality Management System (QMS) is in place and product testing has been successfully completed, a Kitemark Certificate will be issued for each of the five stages of Regulation 4. The certificate will specify the scope, detailing the water fitting or range of water fittings covered, along with their relevant performance characteristics.
